Taxonomy listings show 7 cats classified as 'Big Cats'. They are:

Panthero leo - Lion                     Panthero tigris - tiger                                   Panthero pardus - leopard

Panthero onca - jaguar               Panthero uncia - snow leopard                      Neofelis nebulosa - clouded leopard

Acinonyx jubatus - cheetah

Whilst the first five are definitely big cats in anyone's definition, the same cannot be said for the diminutive tree cat - the Clouded Leopard. Likewise the relatively defenceless Cheetah also sits uncomfortably in this category. Taxonomy listings show 28 cats classified as 'Small Cats'.

They are endearing but ferocious cats who range from the savannahs of Africa, through the jungles of South America and Asia, to the mountains of North America and Europe. Some are at the very edge of extinction, victims of lost habitat and the beauty of their own pelage. The group includes the Pallas cat, Caracal, Lynx, Cougar, Serval, Scottish Wildcat and many more.

Is any cat ever truly domesticated?

Well some ofthese are the cats that live with us and share our lives, our food and our beds.
